About Mimi
Dr. Mimi Vishoot and Jemaine
I practiced general small animal veterinary medicine for 26 years, 22 of which were here in Western Nevada County. I owned Pleasant Valley Veterinary Center in Penn Valley for 13 of those years. With a fantastic staff and amazing colleagues, I was able to practice veterinary medicine at my own pace until it became clear that I was ready to transition to a calmer approach to providing veterinary care in our community.
My Background…
I grew up the youngest of 4 kids, tromping around and riding my horse bareback through the oak woodland hillsides of the Santa Cruz mountains. My mom had been a nurse, and my father, an orthopedic surgeon, was an outdoorsman and nature-lover. Dad shared his passion with us through backpacking and ski trips in the Sierra Nevada.
Spending time working in my dad’s office over summer breaks gave me a taste for what the medical profession had to offer. It also gave me a chance to watch dad’s healing hands in action. And when the veterinarian came out to treat the horses at the little boarding stable I thought, “Hey! That looks like a cool way to be a doctor!”
Fast forward to a Bachelor’s degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology with a Minor in Chemistry from Humboldt State University in 1985, followed by a few years working in the biotechnology field, I finally pursued my dream and earned my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 1994. As a bonus, I had the good fortune of marrying my beloved husband, Steve Nicholson, on July 17, 1993.
In my spare time I enjoy hiking, downhill skiing, walking the dogs, practicing qigong, as well as cooking, mountain biking and singing in Sierra Master Chorale with Steve.
